5 Tips and Ideas on How to Save Money in the Home

Saving money on our home budgets isn't a new frugal idea. Some American families have been doing it for centuries. It is a way of life for them and is taught with pride to their off springs. These are some of the things I have learned from my family.

[1] Never buy Croutons, make them. Keep end pieces, or stale bread until you have enough for a cookie sheet, spread one side in butter then sprinkle on garlic powder or use equal amounts of olive oil and tomato juice, mix together and slowly cover the bread with the mixture. Slice the bread into cubes and put on cookie sheet then bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. The are great with salads, soups, chili or making a dressing for turkey. They should be stored in a air tight container in the pantry or fridge, depending on the topping.

[2] Instead of buying expensive pet beds, find a sturdy cardboard box and buy a big pillow at a thrift store. If you want to fancy it up, cover the box in contact paper and put an old pillow case on the pillow. Your pets will have a warm comfy place to rest and you will have saved money.

[3] Have something small that needs to be reheated or baked in an oven. Use a double layer of foil! You can bake a couple of biscuits or reheat a chicken breast by just placing the foil on your oven shelf. No messy pot or pan to wash. The foil can be reused several times, depending on item baked.

[4] Bacon idea. If you like bacon but end up throwing out the last third of the package before using it up, try this. When you bring it home from the store, open the package and place 2-3 slices on a piece of waxed paper, fold to make a package. Repeat until you have gotten all slices in packages. Place packages on a cookie sheet in the freezer, when frozen, put them into a zip freezer bag and store in the freezer. Now you have just the right amount for a meal at hand anytime you want it, with none going to waste.

[5] When storing or freezing tomato based food item, always spray the inside of the plastic container with cooking spray. They will come out clean with no red coloring when the food is used.
